HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Kampala’s jazz lovers are polishing their playlists and pressing their best outfits for the dfcu Jazz in the Pearl Festival that will unfold at Serena Hotel this Saturday.
One of the organisers at dfcu described the show as a once in a life time encounter with cool jazzy notes.
“It’s more than just a concert, Its an experience that blends world-class sound, Ugandan soul, and serious style,” she said in a press release issued on May 8th 2025.
She added that this time round, the Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum leads the lineup, bringing his smooth, gospel-laced jazz to the Pearl of Africa.
“With a career that includes collaborations with Whitney Houston and 12 Grammy nominations, he’s set to deliver a soul-stirring show,” she said, adding that alongside him, Uganda’s own Isaiah Katumwa, the trailblazing Tshaka Mayanja, and the vibrant Black Roots Academy of Soul will round out a spectacular evening.
She described Kirk Whalum as the smooth sax legend whose gospel-infused jazz has earned him global respect and 12 Grammy nominations.
“Sharing the stage with this maestro will be Uganda’s finest acts such as Isaiah Katumwa, with his rich Afro-jazz fusion. There will also be Tshaka Mayanja, the godfather of Uganda’s jazz scene,” further reads the press release.

Also lined up is the electric Black Roots Academy of Soul, young guns who are redefining modern jazz with African soul.
Talking about what makes dfcu Jazz in the Pearl So Special, she said it’s more than a concert.
“Its in a luxury setting at Serena Hotel, where delicious bites and cocktails will be served. It will also offer a chic networking lounge all surrounded by insta-worthy photo zones
New entrants to Jazz?
Just in case it’s your first time to experience full blown jazz music, she said they will find each set unique.
“Improvisation will be part of the magic. They will feel the rhythm deep within them, since jazz is meant to be lived,” further says the release.
It added that attendees do not need to know every song, but need to just listen with their hearts.
Giving the style tip of the day, the release said that the attendees just have to look smart, smooth, and sophisticated.
“Jazz fashion is all about making an impression. Plan to make an impression Saturday evening,” it says.
It makes sense
Concerning the entry ticket which will give the show goers the right to groove, it said those in the regular category will have to part with Shs 300,000, while a table of 8 will go for Shs 6,000,000. Tickets are available at dfcu Bank branches, Quicket, and selected outlets.
The way things are moving, this promises to be Uganda’s most soulful night. Those who miss it would have to do it at their own peril.
