
The wreckage of the ill-feted taxi floating on Malaba River
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Four people have breathed their last and 13 are nursing wounds after a taxi plunged into the Malaba River along the Busia-Tororo Road.
According to eye witnesses, the driver of the ill-feted taxi reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which then veered off the road and hit the grey river below.
“When the taxi lost it’s direction, the occupants began wailing. It went on to collide with the bridge, and plummeted into the Malaba River below. We then rushed and tried to save the occupants,” said an eye witness, who only recognised himself as Opio.
The police later confirmed the crash and loss of lives.
“Our investigations have revealed that the driver of the vehicle with registration number UA 889AM, was traveling at high speed when it tragically struck and killed a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road,” said Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police spokesperson.
He confirmed that the plunge instantly killed three passengers inside the taxi, in addition to the pedestrian.
Kananura said that the thirteen individuals who were injured were promptly rushed to Tororo Hospital for medical attention. The driver was confirmed to be among the injured.
The wrecked vehicle has since been towed to Busia Police Station as authorities commence a thorough investigation into the incident.
