Hoima stadium to be handed over to Government ahead of December 2025 deadline
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Uganda’s sports sector is set for a major boost as construction of the Hoima City Stadium reaches 95% completion.
The state-of-the-art facility, being developed by Turkish firm Summa, is one of the flagship projects under the government’s sports infrastructure plan.
According to the National Council of Sports (NCS), the contractor had initially projected a December 2025 handover but now indicate the possibility of finishing ahead of schedule.
“Hoima City Stadium is at 95% completion. By their own projections, Turkish firm SUMMA set themselves a December handover timeline but say they could finish even sooner,” National Council of Sports revealed on their X handle, formerly Twitter.
The Hoima Stadium is expected to host international-standard matches and provide a platform for nurturing talent in the country. With seating capacity estimated at over 20,000, the stadium will not only serve football but also other sporting and community events, positioning Hoima as a key hub for regional sports development.
Meanwhile, progress is also being made on another major project—the Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira. Named after Uganda’s Olympic gold medalist John Akii-Bua, the facility is being constructed by Egyptian firm Samco. According to updates from the NCS, the project is advancing steadily, with works expected to meet international standards upon completion.
These stadium developments align with Uganda’s bigger vision of expanding sports infrastructure to international levels. With the country set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Tanzania and Kenya, modern facilities are a top priority.
The Hoima and Akii-Bua projects will complement Mandela National Stadium (Namboole), which has previously undergone major renovations to meet CAF and FIFA requirements.
Beyond AFCON, the new stadiums are expected to inspire grassroots sports, create jobs, and stimulate local economies. Officials believe such investments will position Uganda not only as a competitive sporting nation but also as an attractive destination for regional and international tournaments.
