Joshua Baraka
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Ugandan fast-rising star Joshua Baraka has set off a wave of reactions online after making comments that many fans believe were directed at seasoned artist Eddy Kenzo.
While appearing on UBC TV for an interview with Calvin Da Entertainer, Baraka was asked how he would handle international recognition if he ever landed major nominations or global awards.
Calvin drew a comparison to Eddy Kenzo, who has earned several international honors over the years, including two Grammy nominations — the most recent being for the 2026 Grammy Awards.
Baraka responded by stressing that he wants his talent, not external influences, to define his rise.
“For me, the music is enough. I don’t want my achievements to be tied to anything else. Let the work speak, let the music be the evidence,” he said.
He went on to explain that he prefers his journey to remain organic, adding that he does not want connections, affiliations, or industry networks to become the explanation behind any global acknowledgment he may receive in the future.
The interviewer later asked him about long-standing criticism directed at Kenzo — specifically claims that some of his awards and nominations have been attributed more to the popularity of dance videos or behind-the-scenes support than to musical merit. Baraka, without mentioning Kenzo directly, maintained that he wants his recognition to come from “pure music.”
For years, Eddy Kenzo has weathered public scrutiny from Ugandans who question how he secures high-profile nominations. Yet he has consistently brushed off the chatter and continued to achieve international success.
