Britney Spears
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Pop superstar Britney Spears has reportedly vowed never to perform in the United States again after being arrested in California on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to media reports.
The singer was arrested by the California Highway Patrol at around 9:30 pm local time on Wednesday. Authorities later confirmed that Spears was taken into custody following a traffic stop and processed on suspicion of drunk driving.
According to officials from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office in Southern California, the 43-year-old singer was released in the early hours of Thursday morning. She is expected to appear before the Ventura County Superior Court on May 4 to answer to the charges.
A representative for Spears described the incident as “unfortunate and inexcusable,” saying the singer intends to cooperate fully with authorities.
“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the representative said in a statement. “Hopefully she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
The representative added that Spears’ family and close friends are rallying around her to help provide support and stability.
“Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success and well-being,” the statement said.
Shortly after news of the arrest broke, Spears appeared to deactivate her account on Instagram, further fueling speculation about the singer’s emotional state.
Spears remains one of the most successful pop artists in music history, known worldwide for hits such as “Toxic,” “Everytime,” “Gimme More,” “Womanizer,” “Stronger,” and “…Baby One More Time.” Her decades-long career helped shape modern pop music and made her one of the best-selling artists of all time.
However, the singer has repeatedly suggested she is distancing herself from the American music industry. In January 2024, Spears said she would “never return to the music industry,” although she has continued to hint at occasional creative projects.
Her last official release was a 2022 duet with legendary musician Elton John, which marked her first new music in several years.
In a social media post earlier this year—later deleted—Spears indicated that while she may still consider performing internationally, she does not plan to perform in the United States again. Instead, she expressed interest in staging live shows in countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia.
The singer’s personal life has been under intense public scrutiny for years. From 2008 to 2021, Spears lived under a controversial legal conservatorship that placed control of her finances and many personal decisions under the authority of her father.
She later detailed those experiences in her bestselling memoir The Woman in Me, published in 2023, which provided an emotional account of her struggles during the guardianship.
Meanwhile, her former husband Kevin Federline released his own memoir, You Thought You Knew, in late 2025, further reigniting public discussion about the singer’s turbulent personal history.
As Spears prepares for her upcoming court appearance, the latest incident adds another chapter to the complex life of one of pop music’s most recognizable figures.
