Godfrey Byekwaso
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Centenary Bank has appointed Godfrey Byekwaso as its new Managing Director, effective July 2026, in a leadership transition that signals continuity and renewed focus on digital banking and regional expansion.
Byekwaso succeeds Fabian Kasi, who is moving into the position of Group Chief Executive Officer of Centenary Group after serving 16 years as Managing Director of the bank.
In an official statement, the bank said the appointment was approved by the Board of Directors and cleared by Bank of Uganda, describing Byekwaso as “a seasoned banker with deep institutional knowledge and a strong track record in financial management and strategic leadership.”
Byekwaso, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), has been part of the Centenary family for more than a decade. He joined Centenary Bank Uganda in 2012 as General Manager for Finance before being appointed Managing Director of Centenary Bank Malawi in late 2024.
His elevation comes after a strong turnaround performance in Malawi, where the bank recorded a 168 percent rise in profit after tax to MK5.1 billion in the 2025 financial year. The lender also posted notable growth in customer deposits and total assets under his stewardship.
Industry analysts say his appointment is significant at a time when Uganda’s banking sector is undergoing rapid digital transformation, with financial institutions investing heavily in agency banking, mobile platforms and SME financing.
Centenary Bank, Uganda’s second-largest commercial bank by customer base, manages a balance sheet of about Shs8.6 trillion and serves millions of customers across the country, particularly in rural and agricultural communities.
During Kasi’s tenure, the bank expanded its branch network, strengthened digital financial services and consolidated its position as one of Uganda’s most profitable indigenous banks.
The leadership changes are expected to support Centenary Group’s broader strategy of regional growth and innovation in East Africa’s competitive banking industry.
