HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Prominence and arrogance seems to have been the drivers of his actions, but for former Bournemouth and Liverpool footballer Jordon Ibe, a heated argument with his former girlfriend has now ended with a criminal conviction, a fine and hours of unpaid community service.
Ibe, 30, was sentenced at Croydon Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm following an incident outside his former girlfriend Amie Mayson’s home in Lambeth, south London, in December.
The former England Under-21 international admitted pulling one of Mayson’s braids from her head during the confrontation, leaving her with a bald patch.
‘I made a serious mistake’
Ibe, who represented himself in court, initially denied the assault when he appeared before the court in March. He later changed his plea to guilty.
Addressing the court on Friday, the former Premier League player acknowledged responsibility for his actions.
“I made a serious mistake,” he said, adding that he understood what he had done was wrong and was “genuinely remorseful”.
“I’ve had to look at myself in the mirror. I cannot change what I did but will take responsibility for what I do next,” Ibe told the court.
Magistrate Brij Kalia sentenced him to a 12-month community order, during which he must complete 80 hours of unpaid work and undertake 27 days of rehabilitation activity.
He was also ordered to pay a £764 fine, including a £114 surcharge and £650 in court costs. The total is equivalent to about Shs7.9 million.
Argument turned violent
The court heard that Ibe and Mayson had been involved in an “on and off” relationship since late 2024. On December 14, the two were involved in a heated argument after Mayson confronted Ibe and demanded that he repay money she said he owed her.
Prosecutors said Ibe had arrived carrying a bag containing drinks, snacks and flowers. The confrontation escalated after Mayson threw muffins onto the floor and called him a “druggy”.
Ibe then grabbed her by the hair and pulled one of her braids from her head.
Prosecutor Aya Alshekhili told the court that the assault had left Mayson’s confidence, self-esteem and self-worth “on the floor”.
The physical injury was accompanied by significant emotional consequences, with Mayson telling the court in a victim impact statement that the incident had affected her “both physically and mentally.”
Victim says forgiveness is part of healing
Despite the trauma, Mayson said she still had feelings of fear following the assault. However, she also expressed compassion towards Ibe and said forgiveness had formed part of her healing journey.
Her statement provided a striking contrast between the violence of the incident and the complicated emotions that can follow abuse within relationships.
For Ibe, the sentence brings a formal legal conclusion to an episode that could further overshadow a football career that once promised considerable success.
From Liverpool to Bournemouth
Ibe joined Liverpool in 2012 and made 58 appearances for the club in all competitions before moving through spells at Derby County and Birmingham City.
His most productive period came at AFC Bournemouth, where he made 92 appearances between 2016 and 2020.
The former England Under-21 international’s football career placed him in the public spotlight from a young age. But his conviction serves as a reminder that fame and sporting prominence do not place individuals above the consequences of their conduct away from the pitch.
By accepting responsibility in court, Ibe avoided a trial, but he must now complete his community sentence and rehabilitation programme while carrying the consequences of an assault that left his former partner physically injured and emotionally shaken
