Former Presidential Press Secretary Onapito Ekomoloit Lose Battle to Cancer

HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Ugandans are yet to come to terms with the passing of Francis Onapito Ekomoloit, a former Presidential Press Secretary, seasoned journalist and businessman.

Captain Mike Mukula, who took to Social Media to announce his death said: “On behalf of the Teso community and the country at large, I hereby announce with deep sadness and pain the demise of our brother Hon. Onapito Ekomoloit, a veteran journalist and former Member of Parliament for Amuria County… Further details will be communicated later,” Mike Mukula, the NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Habari Daily has since learnt that the former legislator succumbed to lung cancer, after it was discovered that he had reached stage 4, which is a point of no return.

Onapito began his journalism career at the Monitor newspaper before leaving the Namuwongo-based daily to co-found The Crusader. He served as a Member of Parliament for Amuria County during the 6th Parliament. Later, he was appointed as Presidential Press Secretary.

In 2006, he transitioned to the corporate world, taking up the role of Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs at Nile Breweries, a position he held for 17 years until his retirement last year. Following his retirement, he continued his association with the company as Board Chair.

Following his stint as Presidential Press Secretary, a role later assumed by Tamale Mirundi, Ekomoloit transitioned to the corporate sector. He became Director for Corporate Affairs at Nile Breweries, Uganda’s leading beer manufacturer.
