Fuel Tanker Death Toll rise to 15, While 24 are in Critical Condition

HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Police have confirmed that so far 15 people have perished in the fatal Kigogwa Fuel Tanker accident, while 24 are in critical condition.

The accident, which happened on Tuesday along Kampala-Bombo road, claimed 11 lives on the spot and left scores in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Kiruddu Referral Hospital, situated on the outskirts of Kampala city.

An unconfirmed number of victims are receiving treatment in the hospital’s normal ward.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson said the fuel tanker, with registration number UAM 292Q, was traveling from Kampala to Gulu also led four buildings housing nine shops to be destroyed in the blaze.

He said they were using available technologies, including CCTV footage, to investigate the cause of the accident.

“Efforts are underway to identify the deceased, while the driver of the truck involved in the crash is on the run. We are pursuing all leads to locate and apprehend him,” he said in a statement.

He said the bodies of the victims were to be released to their families once DNA testing is completed.
