According to NUP’s internal electoral commission, over 50,000 expressions of interest were received from across the country, with Kampala and Wakiso districts taking a lion’s share.
Initially, the internal nomination period was scheduled to run from June 1 to June 23, 2025. However, due to an unexpectedly high turnout and logistical delays, particularly in verifying academic documents, the party extended the deadline to July 25.
This gave more time for members to complete their applications and submit the necessary requirements.
“The large turn up is seen as a testament to the party’s growing influence and popularity, especially among Uganda’s youth and first-time political aspirants,” said a NUP official on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to talk to the press.
He added that as the vetting begins, the party faces the delicate task of selecting its flag bearers for various elective positions. This range from Members of Parliament to local council leaders, among others.

Meanwhile, several new entrants into the political space have openly called for a generational shift in leadership, with some challenging longtime NUP incumbents.
This reflects an internal push within the party for fresh energy and wider representation as it gears up for a strong showing in 2026.
