HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Parliament has rescheduled its special sitting to honour the late Rt. Hon. Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali to Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., paving the way for legislators to pay their final respects to one of Uganda’s longest-serving political and military leaders before his state funeral.
Following the tributes in Parliament, the late general’s cortege will proceed to the Kololo National Ceremonial Grounds, where members of the public will be given an opportunity to pay their last respects during a public viewing scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
The change was announced in a statement issued by Parliament on Sunday, revising an earlier programme that had placed the special sitting on Monday, July 20.
“The special sitting to honour the late Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali will now take place on Tuesday, 21 July 2026 at 10:00am,” Parliament said in a statement posted on its official X account.
Earlier, Parliament had announced that the House would convene on Monday morning to honour the veteran statesman.
“There will be a special sitting of Parliament on Monday, 20 July 2026 at 10:00am to pay tribute to the late Rtd Gen. Moses Ali. May Allah rest his soul in eternal peace,” the earlier communication had stated.
However, the House did not explain the reason behind the change in schedule.
Tuesday’s sitting is expected to attract current and former legislators, cabinet ministers, leaders from across the political divide and members of the diplomatic corps as Parliament reflects on the life and service of a man whose political and military career spanned more than five decades.
Members of Parliament are expected to eulogise the former Adjumani West legislator, highlighting his contribution to national service, governance, reconciliation and peacebuilding. The House will also reflect on his role in shaping Uganda’s political landscape through different administrations.
After the parliamentary tributes, the House is expected to adjourn to allow MPs and the public to participate in the remaining state funeral activities.
The late general’s cortege will then head to the Kololo National Ceremonial Grounds for a public viewing at 2:00 p.m., where thousands of mourners are expected to gather to pay their final respects. President Yoweri Museveni, senior government officials, military commanders, religious leaders and foreign dignitaries are expected to attend the state ceremony.
Gen. Moses Ali died on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala at the age of 87 after a period of declining health.
President Museveni, who confirmed his death, described him as a dedicated soldier, experienced political leader and model farmer whose contribution to Uganda’s development would be remembered for generations.
Born in Adjumani District, Gen. Moses Ali built one of the country’s most remarkable political careers. He served in several senior government positions, including as Minister of Finance and Minister of Interior during the Idi Amin administration, before leading the Uganda National Rescue Front rebel movement in the 1980s.
Following reconciliation with the National Resistance Movement government, he became a key figure in President Museveni’s administration, serving in various cabinet positions, including Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business.
He also represented Adjumani West Constituency in Parliament for many years, where he remained a respected voice on national unity, security and the development of the West Nile sub-region.
The parliamentary sitting and subsequent public viewing at Kololo will form part of the official state funeral programme leading to his burial in Adjumani on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, where family, friends, government officials and thousands of mourners are expected to bid farewell to one of Uganda’s most influential post-independence leaders.
