Phina Mugerwa in a recent interview
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Singer Phina Mugerwa, popularly known as Phina Masanyalaze, has officially been nominated to run for Uganda’s Female Workers Member of Parliament.
Phina says her decision to join politics is driven by a desire to defend workers’ rights, especially those in the informal sector.
“I’m a workaholic, and I want to use my experience in the creatives industry to speak for those who often have no voice,” she said after her nomination at the Electoral Commission in Kampala.
She explained that Uganda’s Employment Act mostly protects formal workers, leaving many in the informal sector—who contribute around 30% of the national GDP—without adequate support.
Phina’s campaign will focus on mobilizing and educating informal workers, particularly women, about their rights and opportunities. She also plans to advocate for Ugandan domestic workers abroad, often referred to as “Kadamas,” who face challenges and mistreatment.
“Policies exist for formal workers, but what about our girls and boys working overseas? I’m here to give them a voice,” she said.
With her leadership experience in Uganda’s creative industry, Phina believes she is well-positioned to champion fairness, protection, and empowerment for all Ugandan workers.
