Alex Bagada
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Police has revealed more details about an alleged aggravated robbery in which Alex Bagada, Uganda’s Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions (ADPP) and Head of the Homicide Division, reportedly lost Shs129 million after an encounter with an unidentified woman he met at a sauna in Bugolobi, Kampala.
The incident, which reportedly began as an ordinary relaxation session on October 8, 2026, took a dramatic turn when Bagada allegedly lost consciousness after a social outing with the woman and was later found abandoned in a bush in Wakaliga, several kilometres away from where he had left his vehicle.
His mobile phones and other personal belongings were reportedly missing, while subsequent checks revealed that approximately Shs129 million had allegedly been withdrawn from one of his bank accounts through mobile banking.
The Uganda Police Force is investigating the matter as aggravated robbery, with detectives seeking to establish how the senior prosecutor was allegedly incapacitated, who transported him to Wakaliga and how the money was accessed and transferred.
The woman remains unidentified, and police have not announced any arrests in connection with the incident.
From sauna to Alchemist Bar
According to accounts attributed to sources familiar with the investigation, Bagada met the woman during a relaxation session at a sauna in Bugolobi on the evening of October 8.
The two reportedly struck up a conversation and subsequently agreed to extend their evening at Alchemist Bar, an entertainment establishment also located in Bugolobi.
At the bar, they allegedly consumed drinks before deciding to proceed elsewhere for a private encounter.
Bagada reportedly left his vehicle, registration number UBK 031D, in the bar’s parking lot before entering the woman’s car.
It is from this point that the circumstances surrounding the night become unclear.
According to the allegations being investigated, Bagada’s drinks may have been spiked, causing him to lose consciousness. However, the exact circumstances under which he became incapacitated have not been independently established, and investigators will need to determine whether a substance was administered and, if so, what it was.
The woman allegedly disappeared with his mobile phones and personal belongings, leaving detectives to reconstruct the events that followed their departure from Bugolobi.
Found unconscious in Wakaliga
The following morning, October 9, passersby reportedly discovered Bagada lying unconscious in a bush near Lubiri Secondary School in Wakaliga.
The discovery was particularly alarming because the location was several kilometres from Bugolobi, where he had spent the previous evening.
According to reports about the incident, the people who found him initially feared that they had encountered a dead person before alerting the police.
Officers who responded to the scene established that Bagada was still alive and arranged for him to be taken to Mulago Hospital for treatment.
He was subsequently transferred to Case Clinic, where he reportedly regained consciousness.
It was after recovering that he discovered the extent of his alleged losses, which included his mobile phones, wallet, National Identity Card and money withdrawn from his bank account.
Sources familiar with the case indicated that approximately Shs129 million had been withdrawn through mobile banking while Bagada was incapacitated.
The account was reportedly left with a balance of about Shs570 million.
The circumstances raise questions about how the alleged perpetrators accessed the account, whether they obtained the information needed to authorise the transactions from his stolen devices and whether other people were involved.
Police have not publicly established the identities of those responsible or explained precisely how the reported transactions were executed.
Detectives turn to CCTV footage
Investigators are examining CCTV recordings from Alchemist Bar as they attempt to reconstruct Bagada’s movements and identify the woman.
Correspondence reportedly obtained by ChimpReports indicates that police detectives requested assistance from the Cyber Crime Unit to retrieve surveillance footage from the establishment.
In a letter dated October 12, 2026, Kampala Metropolitan Police CID Commander D/SSP Milton Birungi Beigumamu wrote to the Commissioner of the Cyber Crime Unit at Police Headquarters, requesting forensic assistance in obtaining the recordings.
“This headquarters is investigating allegations of Aggravated Robbery to the prejudice of Mr. BAGADA ALEX attached to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions by unknown persons,” the letter reads.
The correspondence, referenced NATEETE CRB 1076/2026, reportedly indicates that detectives had identified private CCTV cameras at the establishment and obtained the proprietor’s consent to access the footage.
A second letter, dated October 13 and addressed to the management of Alchemist Bugolobi by the Natete Division CID Officer, reportedly confirms that Bagada was sighted at the establishment on the night of October 8, extending into October 9.
The recordings could help establish when Bagada arrived, who accompanied him, whether the woman was captured on camera and the vehicle in which he reportedly left the premises.
Investigators are also expected to examine movements around the bar and possible routes to Wakaliga, while phone records and banking information could help identify those who accessed the stolen devices and benefited from the alleged transactions.
Although investigators reportedly suspect that the woman may have acted with accomplices, that possibility remains unconfirmed.
Prosecutor acknowledges investigation
When contacted by ChimpReports, Bagada acknowledged that police were investigating the matter but declined to provide a detailed account of the alleged robbery.
“Police are investigating the matter. That’s organised crime,” he reportedly said.
Asked to explain what had happened, he directed journalists to the police, saying they should follow up with investigators.
“Follow up with the police since you seem to know much. You may end up helping police in the investigation,” he said.
When informed that the publication had obtained police correspondence relating to his complaint, Bagada reportedly responded sharply: “I have not seen it. I don’t know what’s wrong with you people. You will be arrested.”
His comments came as detectives continued working to establish the sequence of events between the Bugolobi encounter and his discovery in Wakaliga.
The investigation presents an unusual turn for a senior official whose professional responsibilities include overseeing homicide prosecutions. In this instance, Bagada is the reported victim of a crime, while police investigators must assemble evidence to establish what happened.
Questions surrounding mobile banking theft
The alleged loss of Shs129 million highlights the financial risks that arise when criminals obtain access to victims’ phones and other personal information.
Mobile banking offers customers convenience, but stolen devices can become valuable tools for criminals, depending on the security measures protecting the accounts and the information accessible through the phones.
Investigators will need to establish whether the alleged perpetrators accessed Bagada’s account using his devices, whether banking credentials or authentication details were available and how the transactions were approved.
The reported withdrawals also make it important to trace the destination of the money and determine whether it was transferred to other accounts or withdrawn through other channels.
The findings could help detectives establish whether the alleged robbery was carried out by one person or involved a wider criminal network.
For now, however, the allegations have not been fully established, and no suspect has been publicly identified or charged in connection with the reported incident.
Investigation continues
The case has left investigators with several questions: Who is the woman Bagada met at the sauna? What happened after he entered her car? How did he end up unconscious in Wakaliga? Was he drugged, and how was the reported Shs129 million accessed?
CCTV footage, forensic examinations, banking records and telephone data could provide critical answers.
Police are treating the matter as aggravated robbery, but the precise circumstances of Bagada’s incapacitation and the alleged theft remain subject to investigation.
What reportedly began as a social encounter in Bugolobi has therefore developed into a serious criminal inquiry involving a senior public prosecutor and a substantial financial loss.
Until detectives identify the suspect and establish the chain of events, the alleged drugging, the woman’s role and the mechanics of the mobile banking transactions remain allegations rather than proven facts.
