Isabella’s Kyenyanja
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I What began as a modest fish venture has grown into a thriving enterprise for Isabella Katwesigye, thanks to her embrace of social media and digital tools.
Katwesigye, the founder of Fresh Kyenyanja, has transformed her business into a dynamic operation supplying dressed wild fish, tilapia, and Nile perch to an average of 300 households each week. Her enterprise now employs 12 staff—eight women and four men—reflecting her strong commitment to inclusive job creation.
Beyond her workforce, Isabella collaborates with over 20 women suppliers across five landing sites on Lake Victoria, strengthening livelihoods along the fisheries value chain.
Her breakthrough came when she accessed a Shs20 million GROW loan from Stanbic Bank Uganda at an affordable 10 percent interest rate without collateral. The financing enabled her to expand operations, acquire equipment, and improve stock management to meet rising demand.
However, it is her strategic use of digital platforms that has truly set her apart.
With support from the GROW Project, Katwesigye embarked on a digital transformation journey—building a professional e-commerce website and strengthening her presence on TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp Business. Through engaging content and consistent online interaction, she has expanded her customer base and built a strong brand identity.
The adoption of a digital accounting system has further streamlined her operations, improving financial tracking and efficiency.
These innovations have not only boosted sales but also enhanced customer engagement and trust, positioning Fresh Kyenyanja for sustained growth.
Today, Isabella continues to mentor women in her network, promoting financial independence and business skills. Her journey demonstrates how combining affordable financing with digital innovation can turn a small fish business into a scalable and socially impactful enterprise.
