
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Dr. Eng. Harrison Mutikanga, the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd (UEGCL) Chief Executive Officer, has been elected vice-president of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), representing Africa.
The election took place on May 20, during ICOLD’s 28th Congress and 93rd annual meeting in Chengdu, China.
Mutikanga boasts of over 30 years of expertise in civil engineering, water and energy utility management. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Makerere University, a master’s degree from IHE Delft in the Netherlands and a PhD from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.
Commenting on his election, Mutikanga said he will nurture the next generation of dam professionals through targeted mentorship programmes.
“I will endeavour to tap into funding opportunities for Africans to benefit, and build a strong pipeline of future leaders in the hydropower and dams sector,” he said.
He added that he envisions elevating Africa’s voice within ICOLD and promoting the development of sustainable and safe dams across the continent.
“I will also advance dam development in Uganda, and across Africa. This is due to the skyrocketing demand for electricity, water for irrigation, flood control and water supply,” he said.
Established in 1928, ICOLD is the leading international organisation dedicated to sharing expertise among dam professionals.
Boasting of 106 member countries, ICOLD sets global standards and guidelines to ensure dams are built and operated safely, efficiently and economically.
Uganda joined the global body in 2019 as its 101st member.
