HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Recent media reports that Uganda had agreed to receive deportees from the United States of America, especially individuals not holding Ugandan citizenship, have been firmly denied by Kampala.
Ugandan major media channels, citing internal U.S. government documents, reported that the Trump administration had struck a deal with Uganda and Honduras to receive deportees. Reports further claimed that Uganda had consented to accept deported migrants from other African countries, provided they have no criminal records.
Similarly, Honduras was said to have agreed to receive several hundred Spanish-speaking deportees over a two year period.
According to Henry Okello Oryem, Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, said that o the best of his knowledge, the country hasn’t reached such agreement.
“We do not have the facilities and infrastructure to accommodate such illegal immigrants in Uganda. So, we cannot take them,” he said.
The alleged agreement falls under larger efforts by the U.S. Trump administration to fast-track deportations, including relocating migrants to third countries under “safe third country” provisions. Previous deportations have included individuals sent to South Sudan and Eswatini, two countries with prior poor human rights records.
