HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced a nationwide recruitment exercise targeting 10,200 new personnel, a move aimed at replenishing its ranks, strengthening specialized capabilities and preparing the force for emerging security and institutional demands.
Military authorities say the 2026 recruitment drive is one of the most significant in recent years and is primarily intended to replace thousands of officers and servicemen approaching retirement while simultaneously expanding the force’s technical, medical and professional capacity.
Announcing the exercise on Friday, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Col Chris Magezi, said the recruitment will target both ordinary recruits and skilled professionals in fields such as medicine, engineering, aviation, law, education, information technology, sports and music.
According to the UPDF, the recruitment campaign is designed to ensure that the force remains operationally effective while adapting to the increasingly technical nature of modern military and security operations.
One of the principal reasons behind the recruitment is the need to replace personnel expected to retire in the coming years. Military officials explained that a significant number of experienced officers and soldiers are approaching mandatory retirement age, creating gaps that must be filled to maintain force readiness and continuity.
The incoming recruits will therefore help preserve manpower levels across various military formations while ensuring a smooth transition as older personnel exit active service.
Beyond replacing retirees, the UPDF is placing unprecedented emphasis on attracting candidates with scientific and technical qualifications. The force is particularly interested in applicants with backgrounds in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, as well as degree holders in disciplines such as engineering, computer science, medicine and other specialized professions.
Security analysts note that modern militaries increasingly rely on technology-driven operations, making technical expertise as important as traditional combat skills. The recruitment therefore reflects the UPDF’s broader transformation into a technologically capable force able to respond to evolving security challenges.
Officials say specialized professionals will be deployed in areas ranging from military healthcare and aviation to information technology, infrastructure development and legal services.
Another major factor driving the recruitment is the need to staff the newly constructed Mbuya National Referral Hospital, one of the most ambitious military medical facilities established by the government.
The hospital is expected to become operational in the near future and will require a large workforce comprising doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory specialists and other healthcare professionals. A portion of the professionals recruited during the exercise will therefore be assigned to support the facility’s operations.
Military leaders believe that investing in healthcare personnel will improve medical services available to soldiers and civilians while strengthening the UPDF’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies.
The recruitment exercise is also being conducted against the backdrop of improved welfare for soldiers following recent salary enhancements approved by Parliament. The pay increases have significantly improved the attractiveness of military service, particularly among young Ugandans seeking stable employment opportunities.
Under the revised salary structure, a Private’s monthly pay will rise from Shs650,000 to Shs828,426, while Corporals will earn approximately Shs1 million per month. The improvements form part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance the welfare and motivation of security personnel.
The salary adjustments are expected to increase competition for available positions, especially among recent school graduates and young professionals.
To ensure fairness and transparency, the UPDF has adopted an entirely online application process. Applications will be submitted through the official UPDF Recruitment Portal from June 10 to June 24, 2026.
Shortlisted candidates will be announced in early July before undergoing physical screening exercises scheduled to take place between July 20 and August 1, 2026 across the country.
Col Magezi emphasized that the recruitment process is completely free of charge and warned applicants against individuals claiming to offer assistance in exchange for money.
The online system is intended to eliminate opportunities for bribery, extortion and fraud that have occasionally been associated with recruitment exercises in the past.
District and city recruitment quotas will be determined using data from Uganda’s 2024 National Population and Housing Census. Military authorities say the approach is intended to guarantee equitable representation from all parts of the country and ensure fairness in the allocation of opportunities.
The exercise will cater to several categories of applicants. General recruits must be between 18 and 22 years of age and possess a Uganda Certificate of Education obtained in either 2024 or 2025. Successful candidates will undergo basic military training before deployment.
Applicants under the regular forces category must possess a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education obtained during the same period. These recruits are expected to undergo officer development and leadership training programmes before assuming their duties.
Military officials have encouraged qualified Ugandans from diverse professional backgrounds to take advantage of the opportunity, describing the recruitment as a chance to contribute to national service while building rewarding careers.
The recruitment drive represents a significant investment in the future readiness and modernization of Uganda’s armed forces.
