HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Christians in Masaka are grieving the loss of a personal mentor and spiritual guide, and have described the late Rev. Fr. Bonny Kalyesubula as a pillar in their community.
This followed the death of Fr. Kalyesubula, who was the diocesan head of construction projects and parish priest of Kitaasa Parish, died in a fatal road crash along the Villa Maria–Bukomansimbi–Sembabule Road. His vehicle reportedly collided with a fuel tanker, killing him instantly.
The Catholic Diocese of Masaka has henceforth released the official burial programme for the late priest.
The announcement comes as clergy, religious leaders, and hundreds of faithful across the diocese prepare to pay their final respects to a priest widely remembered for his dedication to church development and pastoral service.
According to the programme, Fr. Kalyesubula’s body will be transferred to Kitaasa Parish on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. A requiem Mass will follow at 5:00 p.m., after which an overnight vigil will be held at the parish.
On Friday, June 19, the body will be transferred to Bukalasa at noon. Funeral Mass is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. before burial at 4:00 p.m. at Bukalasa Minor Seminary in Kalungu District.
The funeral ceremonies are expected to attract a large congregation of priests, religious men and women, political leaders, family members, friends, and Christians from across Masaka Diocese and beyond.
Twaha Kasirye, the Southern Regional Police spokesperson confirmed the accident and said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash were ongoing.
The sudden death of the priest has sent shockwaves throughout the diocese, where he was widely respected for his leadership and commitment to church projects.
Masaka Diocesan Chancellor Rev. Fr. Charles Jude Jjuuko described Fr. Kalyesubula’s passing as a major loss to the local church, noting that he played a central role in supervising construction and infrastructure development across the diocese.
He added that the priest was instrumental in ensuring that diocesan projects were completed according to plan and on schedule.
“Fr. Bonny was the eye and pillar of construction works within the diocese. He was dependable and committed to ensuring that projects were completed successfully,” he said.
In addition to serving as parish priest of Kitaasa Parish in Bukomansimbi District, Fr. Kalyesubula was entrusted with overseeing several diocesan development initiatives, earning a reputation as a hardworking administrator and a close collaborator with both clergy and lay faithful.
The Chairperson of the Masaka Diocesan Laity Council, Regina Kitaka, said Christians were struggling to come to terms with the priest’s sudden death.
Many faithful have since taken to social media and church platforms to express their grief and share memories of the priest’s service to the Church.
As preparations for the funeral continue, diocesan leaders have called on Christians to pray for the repose of Fr. Kalyesubula’s soul and to support one another during the period of mourning.
