Equity Bank’s New MD, Shonko to Deliver Perfection

HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I   Equity Bank Uganda Limited has unveiled Gift Shoko as the new managing director to steer it to perfection in Uganda’s competitive banking sector.

According to a press statement issued by Equity Group Holdings Plc, of which Equity Bank is a subsidiary, said the appointment follows the resignation of Anthony Kituuka and marks a significant leadership transition.

“With over 26 years of experience in the banking sector, Shoko, whose appointment awaits regulatory approval, brings a wealth of expertise in commercial banking, leadership, and multi-regional operations across Southern and Eastern Africa,” reads the statement.

It further says that prior to this appointment, Shoko served as the Executive Director of Equity Bank Uganda, where he played a pivotal role in driving strategic initiatives.

“His illustrious career includes serving as the NCBA Group Director for Regional Business, where he oversaw banking subsidiaries in East Africa.

He also once worked as the CEO of Commercial Bank of Africa (Tanzania) Limited, where he spearheaded growth strategies over a five-year tenure.

Speaking on behalf of the Board, Mark Ocitti, Chairman of Equity Bank Uganda, expressed confidence in Shoko’s ability to lead the bank into its next phase of growth.

“He brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record in leadership, corporate strategy, and digital transformation, and his expertise aligns perfectly with our mission to deliver innovative and inclusive financial solutions to our customers,” he said.

Ocitti further said that they expect Shoko’s impact on customer experience, market reach, and community engagement.

 

Banker by training

Shonko’s academic credentials include a Bachelor of Business Studies and Computer Science from the University of Zimbabwe and a Master’s in Business Administration (Banking and Finance) from CIMA in Nicosia, Cyprus.

He is also a certified Executive Coach and Genos Emotional Intelligence Coach, complementing his professional certifications in banking, finance, and leadership.

Earlier in his career, he contributed significantly to Nedbank Zimbabwe through its Graduate Management Training program and later assumed senior management roles.

Shoko’s tenure as Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Executive Officer at Trust Holdings Limited (THL), a Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed financial services group, stands out for his successful restructuring efforts, culminating in the company’s re-listing on the stock exchange.

He has also served on various boards in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi, solidifying his corporate governance expertise.

 

Key player

Equity Bank Uganda has established itself as a key player in Uganda’s banking sector, focusing on digital innovation and inclusive financial services.

With total assets exceeding Shs 3.4 trillion and a customer base spanning over 1.3 million, the bank has consistently prioritized growth and innovation.

Under Shoko’s leadership, Equity Bank Uganda aims to strengthen its position in the market while driving its mission to empower communities through financial inclusion.
