HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Concerns have emerged about the safety and integrity of electoral processes in the country, as the number of youth arrested as a result of violence that marred the National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary primary elections in Nsambya, Kampala, rises to 30.
The chaos, which unfolded in broad daylight during elections on July 17, was captured in a disturbing video that has since gone viral on social media.
Police say at least seven victims have reported losing mobile phones, wallets, and unspecified amounts of cash. CCTV camera footage played a key role in tracking the suspects’ movements, enabling the police to arrest some of them on the same day of the robbery.

The footage shows a gang of thugs violently mugging and robbing members of the public during the electoral exercise, triggering widespread public outrage and prompting swift action from security forces.
“On 17th July 2025, police responded swiftly to the incident, leading to the immediate arrest of eight suspects,” said the Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan ASP Owoyesigyire said.
He added that further analysis of CCTV footage and intelligence from interrogations led to another intelligence-led operation on July 20, during which 10 more suspects were apprehended.
The press statement issued by ASP Owoyesigyire, mentioned those arrested in the second operation Were Phillip, Lubwama Sharif, Wasike Patrick, Ngobi Brian, Mugisha Shafiq, Rashid Sebisaba, Ochwo Emmanuel, Kakooza Abdul Rakim, Ominga Brian, and Katongole Meddy.
“Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to having participated in the robbery and assault of innocent civilians during the electoral exercise,” the police spokesperson noted.
ASP Owoyesigyire emphasised the police’s continued commitment to restoring public safety and bringing all those involved to justice.
He added that further intelligence-led operations are ongoing to apprehend additional suspects still at large.
“We continue to appeal to the public to share any information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects,” he added.
