
A team from Niger arrives at the Entebbe International Airport today
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The monumental TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, which kicks off over the weekend has started bringing excitement at Entebbe International Airport, as teams from around the continent arrive.
According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the tournament is a showcase of Africa’s best homegrown players, who often provide a springboard for emerging stars to secure moves abroad.
It is a biennial African association football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football since 2009 and first announced in September 2007.
According to an official at the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), special arrangements, including a designated arrivals desk, have been put in place by the to facilitate the smooth arrival of the teams.
To the awe of spectators at the airport, the first participating team, Niger, touched down at Entebbe International Airport.
The tournament, which is set to run from August 2nd to 30th, 2025, has led to tightening of security around the airport.
The Uganda Police has also released a traffic advisory ahead of the tournament, which will kick off this weekend. Namboole Stadium is set to host the matches.
This edition of CHAN marks the first time the tournament will be jointly hosted by three East African nations: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. This ill set ground for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, which will also be held by the same East African countries.
A total of 19 national teams will compete in CHAN 2024, divided into four groups. Uganda, as a co-host, is placed in Group C alongside Niger, Guinea, Algeria, and South Africa.
