HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Uganda has officially been selected to host the 15th Edition of the East African Inter-Parliamentary Games, following Burundi’s announcement that it was unable to convene this year’s tournament.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa confirmed the development, noting that the decision was reached after a series of high-level consultations involving Speaker Anita Among, Speaker of Kenya’s Parliament Moses Wetang’ula, and Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Joseph Ntakirutimana.
The East African Inter-Parliamentary Games are a regional engagement designed to promote unity, cooperation, and friendship among lawmakers of the East African Community (EAC).
Beyond sport, the event provides a platform to discuss regional integration, strengthen parliamentary diplomacy, and foster cultural exchange among member states.
The games typically feature disciplines such as football, netball, volleyball, basketball, golf, and athletics, with participants drawn from national parliaments across the EAC, including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the East African Legislative Assembly itself.
Uganda last hosted the games in 2019, when teams from across the region gathered in Kampala and Jinja for a competitive yet cordial tournament. With Burundi bowing out this year, Uganda’s decision to step in underscores its commitment to regional solidarity.
Tayebwa welcomed the responsibility, saying Uganda was ready to organize the games at short notice.
“We are honored to host our colleagues from across the East African Community. These games are not just about sport but about strengthening bonds of unity and cooperation,” he said.
The dates and venues for the competitions are expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
