Entebbe International Airport
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Customs officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) have intercepted a suspected heroin consignment at Entebbe International Airport.
According to an official from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), this has delivered a significant setback to an international drug trafficking attempt and highlighting the country’s strengthened border security measures.
Speaking to Habari Daily on condition of anonymity, he said that the seizure occurred during routine yet intelligence-driven screening of cargo and passengers, where their officers used a combination of non-intrusive scanning technology and specially trained sniffer dogs.
“The operation focused on high-risk consignments and individuals identified through the agency’s advanced customs risk profiling systems,” he said.
Officials at the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), reported that anomalies detected during the initial scans prompted a more detailed inspection.
Upon closer examination, the team uncovered packages believed to contain heroin, concealed in a way intended to bypass standard detection methods.
The suspected narcotics were secured and handed over to aviation security and police authorities. Samples have been collected for forensic testing to determine the type, purity, and quantity of the drugs, which remain under strict security custody.
Investigators have launched a thorough probe to trace the source, transit routes, and intended destination of the drugs. Authorities are also examining whether the case is connected to a broader regional or international trafficking network.
Entebbe International Airport serves as a key regional hub for passengers and cargo, making it a frequent target for criminal syndicates.
In response, URA has strengthened its enforcement capacity through investment in advanced scanning equipment, canine units, and intelligence-led inspections.
“Uganda’s borders are secure, and any attempts to use the country as a transit or destination point for illegal drugs will face stringent enforcement action,” said the tax body.
