Presidential aspirant, Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Uganda’s security agencies have dismissed allegations by National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, that there is a plot to arrest him ahead of polling day and trigger violence to justify a military crackdown.
Kyagulanyi earlier warned that security operatives were planning to detain him before the elections, a move he claimed would be used to rationalize mass arrests, abductions and the deployment of soldiers across the country. He also alleged that confrontations would be deliberately provoked in Mbale City and surrounding areas, while individuals dressed in NUP colours would be used to portray his party as violent.
“We urge our people to remain peaceful and non-violent but very assertive,” Kyagulanyi said while cautioning his supporters.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Uganda Police Force (UPF) have since rejected the claims, describing them as unfounded and intended to cause unnecessary tension.
UPDF Deputy Spokesperson Col Chris Magezi questioned the timing and motive of the allegations, saying they amount to a diversion.
“This is certainly a smoke screen. What is NUP and their leader planning by coming up with this type of empty talk?” Col Magezi said.
He added that security agencies have no plans to arrest the opposition leader. “The inter-agency security services can categorically state that there are no such plans whatsoever to arrest Mr Kyagulanyi at this point, unless he offends the law.”
The Uganda Police Force also issued a separate statement dismissing the accusations as provocative.
“The Uganda Police Force categorically dismisses allegations of a scheme to detain candidate Kyagulanyi Sentamu or engineer incidents before election day. These assertions are unfounded and provocative,” police said.
Police stressed that they are currently providing protection to the NUP presidential candidate during his campaign activities.
“UPF provides security for the NUP candidate throughout his campaign activities, ensuring his safety,” the statement noted.
Security agencies said their focus remains on delivering peaceful elections and appealed to all political actors to act responsibly.
“Our effort is geared to facilitate tranquil elections and we call on every political actor to promote non-violence,” the police said.
They also emphasized that any arrests would only be carried out in accordance with the law.
“All apprehensions occur strictly in line with legal guidelines, with detainees processed in full compliance with the law,” the statement added.
With elections drawing closer, authorities say they remain alert and committed to maintaining peace, while urging political leaders and their supporters to avoid statements that could heighten tensions.
