Uganda Parliament Speaker, Anita Among, the Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa and other legislators receiving the body of the fallen Kalangala Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli at parliament today, Wednesday 22 April 2026
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has led tributes in honour of the late Helen Nakimuli, reflecting on her life as a devoted legislator and mother, while pledging support for her surviving child.
During proceedings in the Parliament of Uganda, Among shared a condolence message from Kibuli Secondary School, where Nakimuli’s daughter, Melanine Sobe, is enrolled in Senior One. The school extended sympathy to Parliament and expressed solidarity with their student following the loss of her mother.
The Speaker used the moment to remind Members of Parliament of their bond with the deceased, describing Nakimuli as someone who was deeply valued across the House. She thanked colleagues for the support and compassion shown since her passing.
Among stressed that although Nakimuli is gone, she leaves behind a lasting legacy through her daughter. She described the young girl as a symbol of hope and continuity, urging leaders to stand with her during this difficult time.
Touched by the school’s message, Among revealed that she and her family made a deliberate decision to intervene. She announced that they had cleared Melanine’s school fees, ensuring her education continues uninterrupted up to Senior Four. Proof of payment, she noted, had already been secured.
The contribution was made through the Anita Foundation, working alongside Bukedea Comprehensive School and the Magogo Foundation to support the child’s future.
Nakimuli’s death has been widely felt within Parliament and beyond, with colleagues remembering her as a committed public servant who balanced leadership with a strong sense of family. Her passing not only leaves a gap in national leadership but also a personal loss to those who knew her closely.
