Known for over speeding and recklessness on the roads, hundreds have stared into death’s blank face, and have not lived to tell the story.
So was the story of the Nigerian forward Abubakar Lawal, who lost his life in a fatal motorcycle accident on Monday morning along Entebbe Road in Kampala.
First responders have intimated to Habari Daily that the accident occurred in the early hours of Monday, and the outcome was fatal.
“Lawal was traveling on a boda boda (motorcycle taxi) when the tragic incident happened. When we rushed to the scene to save his life, he was bleeding profusely,” said a responder on condition of anonymity.
He said by the time a medical team arrived to stop his bleeding and probably save his life, they pronounced him dead as his lifeless body laid on the ground.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
News making the rounds has also revealed that the 29-year-old was heading to a club training session after dropping off a friend at Entebbe Airport when the accident occurred.
Vipers SC, in a touching statement, expressed their sorrow over the loss of the talented forward, describing him as “a dedicated professional and a wonderful human being whose presence in the team will be sorely missed.”

Life journey
Lawal, a skillful attacker, had been a key part of the Vipers SC squad, particularly known for his pace, technical ability, and goal-scoring instinct.
He joined Vipers SC in July 2022 from Rwanda’s AS Kigali and played a crucial role in their 2022/23 Uganda Premier League title victory. This season, he had made eight league appearances.
He had played in various leagues, with stints in Nigeria and beyond before settling in Uganda.
Lawal had enjoyed an industrious career in the Nigerian Premier League, representing clubs such as Kano Pillars FC, Wikki Tourists FC, and Nasarawa United.
By the time we went to press, Lawal’s body has been transferred to a medical facility for postmortem examination.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” Vipers FC further communicated.
The club further said that funeral arrangements were to be communicated in due course.
