MP Ssegirinya Confirmed Dead at 37

HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I   Muhammed Ssegirinya, the MP Kawempe North constituency has been confirmed dead by Rubaga Hospital, the medical facility where he has been kept in ICU for days.

The hospital had earlier on refused to pronounce the legislator dead, saying that he was on life support fighting for his life.

“With deep sorrow, Lubaga Hospital announces the passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Honourable member of parliament for Kawempe North,” said the hospital in a statement.

It further says that the late has been under the dedicated care of their medical team at Lubaga Hospital.

“Despite of all efforts to ensure his recovery, he passed awy today, Thursday, 9th January 2025 at 12:10pm,” further reads the statement.

Signed by management and dated 9th January 2025, the statement further says: On behalf of the hospital, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Parliament of Uganda, the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Members of Parliament, his family and the people of Kawempe North, whom he represented with passion and commitment.”

The hospital administration says it joins the nation in mourning a dedicated servant of the people.

“May his soul rest in eternal Peace.”

 

Gallant fighter

His untimely passing leaves the nation in mourning, particularly the constituents in Kawempe. He has been an MP for Kawempe North in Kampala, representing the National Unity Platform (NUP).

In 2016, Ssegirinya ran in the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party primaries for Kawempe North but did not secure the nomination. He was subsequently, he was elected as the Lord Councillor for Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), representing Kawempe North.

Ssegirinya triumphed in 2021, when he was elected as MP for Kawempe North on the NUP ticket. Among the candidates he defeated was the incumbent, Abdulatif Ssebagala Ssengendo and former Deputy Lord Mayor Sulaiman Kidandala.

He recently announced his intention to seek re-election for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat in the 2026 elections. This was despite the health challenges he faced over the years.
