The couple, whose relationship had captivated fans across East Africa for several years, recently announced the end of their marriage, bringing to a close one of the region’s most talked-about celebrity unions.
In a joint statement shared on social media, Zari and Shakib revealed that they had reached the difficult decision after “much thought and reflection.” While the announcement did not provide detailed explanations about the circumstances behind their separation, it pointed to mutual irreconcilable differences as the primary reason for ending the marriage.
Five years of bliss extinguished
“Five years later after much thought and reflection, we believe it is best for us to part ways due to irreconcilable differences,” the statement read.
The couple emphasized that the separation was amicable and that neither party harboured resentment toward the other.
“There is no anger or resentment, sometimes two people simply grow in different directions. We value each other and remain friends with mutual respect and understanding,” they added.
Although the official statement was brief, their relationship had been under intense public scrutiny for months, with several challenges playing out in the public eye. Among the most significant sources of tension were issues related to Zari’s relationship with her former partner, Tanzanian music star Diamond Platnumz, with whom she shares two children.
Reports of friction between Shakib and Zari intensified in 2024 when videos emerged showing Zari and Diamond together during filming for the Netflix reality series Young, Famous & African. The footage generated widespread discussion on social media and reportedly left Shakib uncomfortable.

Their relationship was further showcased on the popular Netflix reality series Young, Famous & African, where viewers gained insight into their personal lives and relationship dynamics.
Both individuals entered the marriage with significant public profiles. Shakib established himself as an entrepreneur, reality television personality and celebrity boxer, while Zari, popularly known as “The Boss Lady,” remained one of East Africa’s most recognizable socialites and businesswomen. She was previously married to the late businessman Ivan Semwanga before her highly publicized relationship with Diamond Platnumz ended in 2018.
