HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I In its most recent offering up its sleeve, Wendi, a mobile wallet developed by Pearl Bank Uganda, has launched an exciting customer rewards campaign dubbed “Wendi Ku Win”, through which users stand a chance to win cash prizes, fuel vouchers, smartphones and household appliances every week by conducting digital financial transactions.
The campaign, officially launched today at Kampala’s Old Taxi Park in collaboration with the Uganda Taxi Operators Federation (UTOF), is aimed at encouraging more Ugandans to embrace digital financial services while rewarding customers for making everyday payments through the Wendi platform.
Under the campaign, customers who conduct transactions exceeding Shs10,000 using the Wendi mobile wallet automatically stand a chance of winning prizes in weekly draws.
The rewards include fuel vouchers worth Shs30,000, Shs50,000 and Shs100,000, smartphones, household appliances such as microwaves and blenders, as well as cash prizes worth Shs100,000.
The initiative comes as financial institutions and payment service providers intensify efforts to expand digital financial inclusion, particularly among Ugandans who have limited access to conventional banking services.
Speaking at the launch, Andrew Kabeera, Pearl Bank’s Executive Director, said Wendi Ku Win was designed not only to reward customers but also to demonstrate the company’s commitment to developing innovative financial solutions that empower people to take greater control of their financial futures.
He said the campaign would encourage both existing and prospective customers to explore the different services available on the platform as they conduct their everyday financial transactions.
“We believe that during this campaign, both existing and new customers will be able to interact with the Wendi platform as they make fuel payments, pay bills, make money transfers, save, conduct merchant payments, government collections, and Western Union services transfers, which is the right step of ushering more Ugandans into the digital money economy,” Kabeera said.
Riding on growing digital transactions
The campaign comes at a time when Uganda is experiencing significant growth in the adoption of digital financial services.
According to the Bank of Uganda’s July 2025 report, the number of active mobile banking users increased by 16%, from 2.17 million in March 2024 to 2.5 million in March 2025.
Transaction volumes also grew by 8%, from 27.7 million transactions in the year ending March 2024 to 29.9 million in the corresponding period of 2025.
More significantly, the value of transactions increased by 42.4%, from Shs9.9 trillion to Shs14.2 trillion, reflecting the growing importance of digital platforms in Uganda’s financial ecosystem.
These figures highlight the opportunities available to financial technology providers such as Wendi to extend affordable financial services to communities where physical banking infrastructure remains limited.
The campaign also complements the objectives of the National Financial Literacy Strategy (NFLS) 2023–2028, which seeks to promote economic growth and reduce poverty by improving access to affordable and quality financial services.
Wendi targets underserved communities
Priscilla Akora, Pearl Bank’s Head of Marketing and Communications, said Wendi was developed to bridge the financial inclusion gap by providing convenient financial services to underserved populations, particularly customers in last-mile communities.
Since its launch in November 2023, the mobile wallet has onboarded more than one million subscribers and established a nationwide network of over 13,000 agents.
“Since its inception, Wendi has onboarded over one million subscribers and works with over 13,000 agents countrywide,” Akora said.
The platform allows customers to save, send and manage their money securely without necessarily having a conventional bank account or smartphone.
Its services can be accessed through smartphones by downloading the application from Google Play or the Apple App Store, while customers using feature phones can access it by dialling *229#.
The platform is licensed under the National Payment Systems Act, providing a regulated channel through which customers can access various digital financial services.
Beyond ordinary money transfers and payments, Wendi offers a savings proposition that earns customers interest of 12.5% per annum, with flexible savings plans designed to accommodate different financial goals.
It also incorporates a SACCO Management System that enables savings groups to digitally manage contributions, monitor balances and track their savings in real time.
Supporting government programmes
Wendi’s growing footprint has also extended into government service delivery. Through its collaboration with the Government of Uganda, Pearl Bank has used the platform to support the implementation of several public programmes, including the disbursement of Parish Development Model (PDM) funds to beneficiaries and the distribution of relief assistance to victims of the Bududa landslides.
These interventions demonstrate the potential of digital financial platforms to improve the efficiency, accessibility and transparency of public payments, particularly in rural communities.
Kabeera encouraged existing and prospective customers to embrace the platform and participate in the campaign by making qualifying transactions.
“Wendi remains focused on delivering innovative solutions that help Ugandans achieve greater financial wellbeing, and I encourage our customers and all those who are not on Wendi to either dial *229# via their feature phones or download the Wendi mobile wallet from Google Play or App Store and start transacting and stand a chance of winning in the Wendi Ku Win campaign,” he said.
