SSP Nixon Agasirwe
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Utterances made by a principle suspect in the Joan Kagezi murder must have given away the alleged mastermind in some outstanding murders that have rocked this nation for years.
Joan Kagezi, who led Uganda’s terrorism and organized crime prosecutions, was shot dead on March 30, 2015, in Kiwatule while driving with her children.
“A man named Nixon, driving a white government-marked vehicle, ordered the killing,” said Daniel Kisseka Kiwanuka, a UPDF deserter told the International Crimes Division of the High Court on Wednesday.
Kiwanuka, a self-confessed participant in the assassination of senior prosecutor, Kagezi, has also been linked to a number of high profile murders dating back in the early 2000’s.
His confession led to the immediate arrest of Nixon Agasirwe, the former Police Special Operations Commander and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).
He was apprehended by joint security agencies, and our sources have since revealed that he is being held at the Flying Squad headquarters in Kireka. He is reportedly cooperating and assisting in the ongoing investigations.
Security officials believe the name refers to Agasirwe, who previously served as the head of a special operations and investigation unit of police.
Joan Kagezi, the late Prosecutor
Additionally, Agasirwe was previously jailed on charges related to illegal repatriations, unlawful detention, and possession of military equipment. Investigations hit a rock at some point, and he was unceremoniously released, albeit on bail.
Another source close to the investigations also intimated to Habari Daily that they are also revisiting a 2016 government ballistics report, which had been shelved for some years.
That report linked the gun used in Kagezi’s assassination to earlier killings of Muslim clerics, including Sheikh Mustafa Bahiga and Sheikh Hassan Kirya.
The report suggested the same firearm was used in multiple high-profile murders.
“Wrong suspects”
Investigators also allege that Agasirwe may have deliberately arrested wrong suspects in several cases.
“This, we suspect, he did in order to mislead investigations and shield masterminds behind the killings,” said the source on condition of anonymity.
Police is yet to issue an official statement concerning SSP Agasirwe’s arrest and detention. Efforts to reach the Police spokesperson, ACP Rusoke Kituuma were futile as calls to his known telephone number went unanswered.
We will keep you updated on Agasirwe’s anticipated presentation in court.
