Anita Aming listens attentively as Dr Tanga Odoi reads out the results
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Following a protracted duel that appeared to have the ability to tear the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party apart, the Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has emerged winner against Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the incumbent.
We can now confirm that Among is the 2nd Vice Chairperson (Female) NRM CEC representative-elect, after securing the majority of votes at the ongoing delegates’ elections at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson is set to make the official pronouncement and tally results shortly.
Kadaga earlier on lost all districts in Busoga except Kamuli, which is her home district, and Luuka. Outside Busoga, Kadaga failed to win many of the districts in any region, while her rival, Among swept entire blocks like West Nile and Buganda.
Among led in regions such as Teso, Bugisu and Buganda, where she polled hundreds of votes. Kadaga on the other hand trailed disastrously, with some regions reporting zero votes in her favor.
Kadaga has raised her voice in protest, saying that whereas she has served the NRM party for many years, misappropriation of votes, witch hunt and intrigue won the day, leading to her loss.
News reaching our news desk is also saying that Dr Chris Baryomunsi has won the CEC poll in Western Uganda, while John Baptist Loki is leading in Northern Uganda.
Withdrawals
The NRM CEC elections have been faced with several withdrawals of prominent candidates, to make way for stronger ones, upon realising that they are set for humiliation.
One of the suprises was Capt. Mike Mukula, who officially withdrew from the race, clearing the path for Calvin Echodu as the likely NRM CEC Vice Chairperson for Eastern Region.
Kiwanda Suubi, Hakim Kyeswa, Sewava, among others, also bowed out of the race. They left Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, the Minister of State for Microfinance, to face off against Moses Kalisa Karangwa for the Central Executive Committee (CEC) post. Mawanda, who had earlier on announced that he had withdrawn from the race, later stated that he was still standing.
