HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Justice Simon Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has outlined key measures to ensure a smooth and peaceful voting process in the upcoming elections.
Addressing journalists at their office recently, Justice Byabakama said that the results from polling stations will be delivered to sub-county headquarters, which will act as central collection points for all polling stations within each sub-county.
“Voters must be enabled to approach polling stations without fear, intimidation, or distraction and cast their votes freely,” he said. “That is why we are taking a strong stance against people lingering around polling stations after they have cast their votes. From experience, such behavior creates an intimidating environment.”
Justice Byabakama also announced that the public will be provided with toll-free lines to report any incidents at polling stations. “We want to ensure that our election is as peaceful as possible,” he said.
Addressing the issue of money in elections, he noted: “In Uganda, the issue of money has truly become endemic in our elections. The use of vast sums of money has become a significant challenge, and the only way to address it is by having a relevant legal framework in place. We tried to push it through Parliament, but it never saw the light of day.”
