Kisembo, the NIRA boss
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has introduced a WhatsApp service to make it easier for Ugandans to check the status of their National ID applications and find out where to collect their cards. The move comes as part of efforts to improve communication and reduce delays that have frustrated many applicants.
Despite printing over seven million National ID cards, only about 1.5 million have been collected. This leaves more than 5.5 million cards unclaimed at district offices across Uganda. NIRA says many people are unaware that their cards are ready or don’t know the offices where they should pick them up.
By sending their application ID to 0766 501071 on WhatsApp, applicants can instantly confirm if their card is ready and get details on where to collect it. NIRA says the digital service is a response to public feedback requesting faster and more convenient updates.
The WhatsApp service is expected to reduce travel costs and time wasted visiting offices for information. It will also help decongest offices and improve transparency in the ID registration process.
NIRA reminds applicants to pick up their IDs as soon as they receive confirmation. Offices remain open nationwide, and for those without WhatsApp, the toll-free line 0800 211 700 is still available for inquiries. With these updates, NIRA hopes that more Ugandans will finally receive their long-awaited National ID cards.
