Jiggers infestation
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Residents of Jimo and Abye villages in Parabongo Parish, Lamogi Sub-county, Amuru District are living in distress following a jigger infestation that has affected dozens of people.
The outbreak, which residents say started about two weeks ago, has so far left more than 47 people infected, according to Lamogi Sub-county chairperson Atkinson Ojara. The victims include both adults and children.
One of the affected residents, Nancy Ajok, revealed on February 11, 2026, that the jiggers have badly infested her toes and those of her two children, causing severe pain and making movement difficult.
Amuru District Health Officer Dr. Alfred Okello said although his office had not yet received an official report on the situation, jigger infestations are known to spread quickly, particularly during the dry season.
He explained that the condition is caused by sand fleas that penetrate the skin—mostly on the feet—where they feed and lay eggs. The infestation leads to painful sores which, if not treated early, can result in infections such as tetanus.
Dr. Okello added that children between five and 14 years are the most vulnerable since many walk barefoot while playing. He also pointed out that elderly persons and people with disabilities face a higher risk due to hygiene and mobility challenges.
Health officials are now preparing to send teams to the affected villages to establish the extent of the outbreak and implement control and prevention measures
