HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I In recognition of his outstanding leadership and contribution to national development through quality statistical work, Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, the Executive Director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), has been awarded the Rotary Vocational/Service Award.
The prestigious award was presented by the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda during a ceremony held at Statistics House in Kampala, and attended by Rotarians from across the Kampala Metropolitan Area.
While delivering his remarks as chief guest, Mike Sebalu, who also serves as District Governor for Rotary District 9213 and is a member of the Rotary Club of Bukoto, commended Dr. Mukiza for exemplifying Rotary’s core values.
He noted that the award reflects Dr Mukiza’s commitment to integrity, professionalism, and service above self.
Service above self
“Statistics are not just numbers, they are the foundation for decision-making,” Hon. Sebalu said, emphasizing the central role of data in shaping national development.
He explained that accurate and timely statistics are essential for policy formulation, planning, budgeting, and monitoring service delivery, adding that institutions like UBOS play a critical role in steering the country toward measurable progress.
Hon. Sebalu further highlighted the rigorous selection process behind the award, noting that nominees are proposed by members, reviewed by a board, and ultimately approved by a general assembly.
He said Dr. Mukiza stood out for consistently delivering high-quality statistics across all levels of administration—from national to grassroots—making him a deserving recipient. He also acknowledged that Dr. Mukiza is a member of the Rotary Club of Muyenga and a recognized Major Donor within Rotary.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Mukiza expressed gratitude for the recognition, describing it as both a personal honour and a reflection of the collective effort of UBOS staff.
Spirit of collaboration
“I am truly grateful to the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda for recognizing my service with the Rotary Vocational Award,” Dr. Mukiza said. “This award is not only for me personally, but it reflects the commitment of the Bureau and the spirit of collaboration that drives institutional excellence.”
He underscored the importance of statistics in supporting both government and community initiatives, noting that Rotarians often rely on data to complement development efforts.
Dr. Mukiza cited examples such as the blood bank at Mengo Hospital and the cancer unit at Nsambya Hospital, which were established to improve healthcare outcomes.
