HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I An unidentified boda boda cyclist has been blamed for the fatal road crash that claimed the life of Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Duties and National Resistance Movement (NRM) Kayunga District chairperson, Moses Karangwa Kalisa.
In a statement issued on Monday, police spokesperson Michael Kananura said the accident involved a Toyota Hilux registration number UG 0101 151 and an unidentified motorcycle.
“A serious road traffic crash that later turned fatal was registered at Suuka along the Kayunga–Jinja Road in Kayunga District on the night of 17 May 2026 at approximately 21:00 PM,” Mr Kananura said.
He further noted that preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Hilux was travelling from Kayunga towards Jinja.
“Upon reaching Suuka near the Lake Oil Petrol Station, the vehicle collided with an unidentified motorcyclist who was joining the main road,” he said.
Police further said that whereas the crash occurred on the night of May 17 at Suuka along the Kayunga–Jinja Road in Kayunga District, they lack details about the motorcyclist.
Police said the impact caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which overturned several times.
“As a result of the collision the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which overturned several times,” the statement reads.
According to police, three passengers sustained injuries in the crash, including Karangwa, who suffered critical injuries.
“The victims were rushed to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention. Karangwa was later referred to Nakasero Hospital where he was pronounced dead,” Mr Kananura said.
Karangwa also previously served as NRM chairperson for Jinja Municipality and was appointed Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Duties by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in January this year.
Police said investigations into the exact cause of the crash were ongoing.
