Bolt proposing to his longtime partner, Kasi Bennett
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Usain Bolt has taken one of the biggest leaps of his life off the track, getting down on one knee and proposing marriage to his longtime partner, Kasi Bennett, during his 40th birthday celebration in Kingston, Jamaica.
The sprint legend chose a rooftop celebration at the One Belmont venue on Friday, August 21, surrounded by close family and friends, to ask Bennett to become his wife. After more than a decade together and three children, Bolt’s surprise proposal marked a major new chapter for one of sport’s most celebrated couples.
Bolt, who was dressed in a tan checkered suit, reportedly caught Bennett completely off guard. The emotional moment unfolded as the Jamaican athletics icon exchanged the excitement of competition for a deeply personal milestone, presenting his longtime partner with an engagement ring featuring a five-carat pear-shaped diamond surrounded by smaller diamonds on a cushion-style band.
The lavish ring added another striking detail to an already memorable birthday celebration.
No wedding date or venue has yet been announced, with the engagement only days old. For now, the focus is on the significance of Bolt’s decision to propose after years of building a life and family with Bennett.
A birthday tribute before the surprise
Perhaps the most poignant part of the engagement story is that Bennett had publicly celebrated Bolt only hours before he asked her to marry him.
In a heartfelt birthday message shared on Instagram, Bennett described Bolt in deeply personal terms, calling him her “person,” “love,” “home” and “forever.”
She also praised him not simply for his extraordinary sporting achievements, but for the role he plays within their family.
“Happy 40th birthday to my person. My love, my home, my forever,” Bennett wrote, describing him as an incredible father and the centre of their little world.
She went on to celebrate the life they had created together and said she was grateful to share it with him.
Little did Bennett know that Bolt had already prepared a surprise that would turn her birthday tribute into an even more memorable milestone for both of them.
By the end of the evening, the man she had publicly called her forever had made the question official.
A relationship spanning more than a decade
Bolt and Bennett have been together since 2013, although their relationship remained relatively private during its early years.
The athletics legend affectionately referred to Bennett as his “First Lady,” but the couple became much more familiar to the global public during the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Bennett was among those supporting Bolt as he produced another remarkable performance on the world’s biggest sporting stage. By the end of the Rio Games, Bolt had cemented his place in Olympic history after completing his famous “triple-triple” — winning gold in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4×100 metres relay at three consecutive Olympic Games.
While Bolt was breaking records on the track, Bennett was becoming an increasingly visible part of the story surrounding his life away from competition.
Their relationship subsequently developed into a family partnership, with the couple welcoming three children.
Their daughter, Olympia Lightning Bolt, was born in May 2020. A year later, in June 2021, they welcomed twin sons, Thunder Bolt and Saint Leo Bolt.
For a man whose professional career was defined by speed, records and spectacular moments, family life has provided a different kind of legacy.
Why Bolt waited
Bolt’s decision to propose after so many years together is also consistent with his previously expressed views about marriage. The Jamaican superstar has spoken about the influence of his parents’ relationship on his own approach to commitment. His parents reportedly dated for around a decade before getting married, an example that helped shape Bolt’s thinking about when the time was right to take the same step.
That may help explain why the Olympic champion did not rush towards marriage despite having been with Bennett since 2013 and becoming a father of three.
Instead, the couple spent years building their relationship and raising their children before Bolt finally got down on one knee.
From the track to family life
Bolt’s proposal represents a striking contrast to the moments that made him famous.
For years, the Jamaican’s defining images were those of him exploding from the starting blocks, celebrating victories and standing at the centre of packed stadiums with his arms raised.
At 40, however, one of his biggest moments came not in front of thousands of spectators at an athletics stadium, but on a rooftop in Kingston surrounded by people close to him.
The proposal also adds a new dimension to the life story of a man who has already achieved almost everything possible in athletics.
Bolt retired from competitive sprinting in 2017 after an unprecedented career that included multiple Olympic gold medals and world records. Since then, his role as a father and partner has increasingly become central to his life away from the track.
His engagement to Bennett now marks another milestone. After 13 years together, three children and countless shared experiences, Bolt has finally made the leap from longtime partner to future husband.
And although the couple have yet to announce when or where they will marry, one thing is already clear: Bolt’s latest winning moment had nothing to do with a stopwatch.
It happened when he got down on one knee, held out a ring and asked Kasi Bennett to spend the rest of her life with him.
