HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Over one thousand Ugandans stand a chance to have their education sponsored, courtesy of the Mastercard Foundation.
In a recent announcement, the foundation said on offer are over 1,000 scholarship opportunities for financially constrained learners.
“Over 70% of the new scholarships at Makerere University are
reserved for young women and 25% reserved for youth with refugee status,” reads part of the recently issued statement.
Under this sponsorship arrangement, Mastercard Foundation
Revealed that it has renewed its partnership with Makerere University.
“Our partnership will last for several academic years between
2023 and 2034. This is a long term partnership in which we expect thousands of students to participate,” said the sponsors.
In order to become eligible, students should be 28 years or younger at
the time of the deadline of application. The deadline will be June 14, 2024, and those eligible for applying must meet certain conditions.
Some of these conditions include qualifying for admission
at Makerere University main campus under the private sponsorship scheme.
“Beneficiaries must also be in possession of a HSC certificate, having completed their advanced level education or its equivalent. They should also have evidence of significant financial hardship and completion of any other scholarship, including government.
The applicants under the categories of refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPS) and students with disabilities should be 32 years of age or younger.
The foundation further says that at most, 70% of the scholarship opportunities will be awarded to female applicants while 30% will go to Male applicants.
“25% of the scholarships shall be awarded to refugees and
Internally displaced persons (IDPs),” say the sponsors.
Henceforth, Makerere University is recently announced the first
cohort of 95 undergraduates and five master’s scholarship opportunities to nationals.
“Also to benefit will be refugees, internally displaced youth and international students joining the university in the academic year 2024/25 under the private sponsorship scheme,” further says the
statement.
The statement indicates that the prioritised degree programmes are those aligned to the third national Development Plan (NDPIII) strategic development areas of agriculture, tourism, mineral development infrastructure and human capital development.
Mastercard Foundation has a plan to create over four million jobs in key sectors. According to their areas of focus in Uganda, the foundation is targeting millions of young women and youths by 2030.
