HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Outgoing Mawokota South Member of Parliament Yusuf Nsibambi has caused a stir after confirming that he ordered the disconnection of electricity supply to his home village shortly after losing his parliamentary seat.
Nsibambi, who contested on the FDC ticket, was defeated by NRM’s Susan Nakawuki in the recent elections. Addressing the matter, he openly admitted to cutting off the power, saying the decision followed what he described as betrayal by voters he had supported for years.
He argued that the electricity infrastructure in question was his personal investment, stating that he financed the purchase of the transformer and electric poles and allowed the lines to pass through his land.
Nsibambi also attributed his loss to political misunderstandings involving Counsel Denis Bugaya, whom he said he had mentored in law and initially trusted to stand in for him if his nomination failed.
While Bugaya reportedly declined active participation in politics due to his affiliation with the Buganda Kingdom, Nsibambi says he was later angered to see him backing another contender, Bosco Lubyayi — a development he believes split support and weakened his campaign.
The former legislator further cited remarks allegedly made by Bugaya suggesting he had left no tangible legacy in the area — comments Nsibambi says pushed him to withdraw services he personally introduced, including electricity that now powers major projects such as Bugaya’s large poultry farm.
Residents have since sought intervention from authorities, including Minister Nankabirwa and the police, to restore the electricity. However, Nsibambi insists he is ready to defend his position, questioning the community’s right to continue using infrastructure he claims to have funded privately.
He has also announced his exit from active politics following the election fallout.
