HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Uganda has deployed a fresh contingent of troops to Somalia, with the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces flagging off Battle Group XLVII as part of its continued contribution to regional peacekeeping efforts. The unit, which completed months of intensive preparation at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre in Singo, Nakaseke District, now takes on a critical role in supporting stability and strengthening security under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia.
Battle Group XLVII assumes responsibility from the outgoing contingent, continuing Uganda’s long-standing commitment to peace support operations in the Horn of Africa. Their primary role is to help stabilise volatile areas, protect key installations, and support efforts aimed at restoring law and order in Somalia.
This includes working alongside other international forces and Somali security agencies to counter threats posed by insurgent groups and to create an environment conducive to governance and development.
The deployment follows a rigorous pre-deployment training programme designed to prepare the troops for the complex realities of modern peacekeeping. The training covered combat readiness, counter-insurgency tactics, civilian protection, and coordination with multinational forces.
It also emphasized discipline, mental resilience, and adherence to international humanitarian standards, ensuring that the soldiers are equipped not only for combat situations but also for community engagement and peace-building roles.
Commanded by Colonel Wilson Barigye, the battle group is expected to operate as a cohesive and highly disciplined unit. Leadership has stressed the importance of teamwork and professionalism, recognizing that the success of the mission depends on coordination and mutual trust among troops. The soldiers are also tasked with representing Uganda on the international stage, making conduct and integrity central to their responsibilities.
Beyond security operations, Battle Group XLVII plays a broader role in peace-building. Their presence contributes to safeguarding humanitarian efforts, enabling aid delivery, and supporting reconstruction initiatives in conflict-affected regions. By maintaining security, they help create space for political processes and socio-economic recovery, which are essential for long-term stability in Somalia.
The deployment also underscores Uganda’s strategic role in regional security cooperation. Through its participation in African Union-led missions, the UPDF continues to demonstrate its capacity and commitment to addressing cross-border security challenges. For Battle Group XLVII, the mission is both a test of readiness and an opportunity to contribute to lasting peace, reflecting Uganda’s broader vision of stability and cooperation in the region.
