HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Algerian Vice President Azouz Nasri arrived in Uganda on Monday at the head of a 10-member diplomatic delegation to attend the swearing-in ceremony of President Yoweri Museveni, scheduled for Tuesday at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala. Delegations from 28 countries are expected, government officials have disclosed.
The Algerian delegation was received by senior Ugandan government officials ahead of the highly anticipated inauguration, which is expected to attract more than 35 Heads of State and about 40,000 guests from across Africa and beyond.
Museveni, 81, will be sworn in for his seventh elective term as President of Uganda, extending a rule that began in 1986 when his National Resistance Army captured power after a five-year guerrilla war. The inauguration follows the 2026 general elections in which the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) secured victory and maintained its parliamentary majority.
Security around Kampala and particularly the Kololo Independence Ceremonial Grounds has been significantly heightened ahead of the event, which government officials describe as both a national celebration and a showcase of Uganda’s growing diplomatic influence on the continent.
One of the key highlights of the ceremony will be the traditional 21-gun salute, a symbolic military honour reserved for heads of state and major national occasions. The salute, which will be accompanied by military parade inspections and ceremonial processions, is expected to underscore the significance of the inauguration and the continuity of Museveni’s administration.
The swearing-in ceremony will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., according to the official programme released by government. Senior security officials, including the Inspector General of Police and Chief of Defence Forces, are expected to arrive at 8:50 a.m., followed by Members of Parliament, diplomats and ministers at 9:00 a.m.
Other dignitaries scheduled to arrive include the Chief Justice at 10:00 a.m., the Speaker of Parliament at 10:10 a.m. and the Vice President at 10:20 a.m. Religious leaders will lead national prayers before Museveni takes the oath of office for the 2026–2031 term.
This year’s inauguration is being held under the theme: “Protecting the gains, making a qualitative leap into high middle income status,” reflecting the government’s emphasis on economic transformation, infrastructure development and regional stability.
The Ugandan government has declared Tuesday, May 12, 2026, a public holiday to enable citizens across the country to follow the proceedings.
