Anita Among
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has firmly shut down ongoing speculation linking her to Uganda’s top job, making it clear she has no interest in the presidency.
Speaking during her appearance at the PLU headquarters, the Bukedea Woman MP said the claims have been blown out of proportion and do not reflect her personal ambitions.
“I don’t even have the urge. I don’t even have the wish,” Among said, distancing herself from the growing political chatter.
She emphasized that her focus has never been on seeking higher office, noting that even her current position came as more than she expected in her political journey.
“Even where I am now, I have overachieved. I did not expect to be there,” she said.
Among also questioned her own suitability for the presidency, pointing to the weight of responsibility that comes with leadership at that level.
“Even being a Member of Parliament is too much. How will you run this country?” she asked.
She added, “I don’t go for what I cannot handle,” reinforcing her stance that the presidency is not something she is pursuing.
The Speaker instead revealed that she is looking toward an exit from active politics, stating that she plans to retire in 2031.
“I am saying, 2031, I am retiring from active politics,” she said.
On the question of succession, Among pledged her support for whoever President Yoweri Museveni endorses, signaling loyalty to the current leadership’s direction.
“If my brother is standing or anybody that the president shows me support, that is the person I will support,” she noted.
For months, her name has been part of discussions around potential successors, alongside that of Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Her latest remarks now draw a clear line under that speculation.
